November Week One

We are one week into November, and I have to start by saying this month is going by so quickly! Some days it feels like I look down at the calendar and two or three days have gone by instead of one.

That said, we do have progress on a new book. I’m a few chapters in, and I’m very excited to see where things are going. It is a little bit different than my previous book. It’s still YA, but this one is not science fiction.

Now, for any of you that have already read my first book, rest assured that Cassie and Alex’s adventures are not over! This new work in progress (as of yet untitled) will be a separate series and I will most likely write them in tandem.

Then what is it?

It is still speculative fiction, but if I had to narrow it down at this point I think I would go with urban fantasy. My critique group (a small group of amazing individuals and writers that I will tell you all more about at a later date) posed a question last month about some of our favorite writers growing up. This got me thinking — about L. J. Smith books. Growing up, I adored her stories. The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, pretty much all of them. This book that I am currently working on is loosely inspired by her Night World series, and a nod to those childhood stories that captured my imagination as I hope to capture the imagination of my own readers.

The downside to my update, I’m definitely not currently on track to hit my 50k words. Between the recent release, creative downtime, some new updates to my favorite video games, and the upcoming holidays, life definitely has me jumping through some interesting hoops.

However, I am still writing every day, and that is the important part. And who knows, inspiration tends to strike in the most unexpected ways so I may catch back up.

I would love to hear about the progress any of my fellow authors are making! So, if you have taken up the November Challenge, or even have something of your own that you are hard at work on, please feel free to comment below and share how things are going!
